question 1 SECOND DRAFT

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Inspiration- for our inspiration when starting to gather ideas on what we wanted to achieve and we were going to use our research and planning section, we looked at several different videos, rita oras- how we do we wanted the video to look current and intimate but to also include personality and that is when the party theme came to mind, we loved rita oras video and also looked at dance videos such as a red light dance video.
Other inspiration- we also looked at current films are target market (being people who enjoy clubbing/ dance music aged 16-25) and we came up with the ‘Project x’ theme as a direction to go in.
Song- When starting the research and planning for our media product we decided that we wanted to go down the fun/ party route for our video, we chose an upbeat dance song because we wanted to be it to be current and to be able to be creative with it.
Dance theme- We chose to analyse different current dance/ pop videos, we particularly liked Rita Oras video ‘how we do’ and chose to look at in our research and planning section, we wanted to use this for inspiration because we liked the style used and would reach out to a similar target market as us. We have developed the typical dance video being people in a group or club to reach are final decision of just using our band members but against loud backgrounds to portray the same chaotic appearance. All of the dance/ pop videos we looked at use bright attractive colours so we wanted this to be represented into our video. Mise en scene-  we then decided to research into similar artists so we can develop our ideas for the mise en scene and locations we could interpret into our video, we have stuck to the typical conventions of a music video by using features such as our female artist lip syncing and using shots of the second member of our band dj’ing, we have also challenged typical conventions of music videos by choosing to keep the location on our final version in the same place, although we have kept it in the same place we have changed the background colours and patterns to add variety into the video, the video is also very in your face with the colours we wanted to project an energetic vibe from the video and I think we achieved that with the bold colours and busy patterns.
Band- we wanted to take a different approach towards who makes up our band/ artist, We looked into unique bands such as the ting tings and liked the way they aren’t the stereotypical girl/boy band, so we decided to use a girl and boy combo for ours.
Styling- we wanted the style for our band to be quite casual but very up to date, we didn’t want to overcrowd the video or take anything away from the lip syncing or dj’ing.
Shots- We have decided not to over complicate the lip syncing shots of our female artist because we wanted them to look authentic. We tried to use quirky and fun shots where he female artist is singing, similar to some of the shots seen in ‘how we do’ rita ora.
Digipak and advert- After looking at several different digipaks I felt the layout was the thing I wanted to look into most, I searched different covers and albums to look into where if an image was used and where it was placed, For my digipak and advert I wanted  it to reflect the video and band well, by choosing a bold pattern which is instantly striking I wanted to grab attention, I then chose to have the band  in amongst the pattern so it blocks some of their faces out, I chose to do this because I felt it brings in some of their character as a band but still keeps it mainly about the bold pattern/ style of music. I used the same location in front of the projector screen for my images on the digipak and advert I also used the same image because I felt it shows consistency. My reasons for wanting to put the track list inside the digipak are that I wanted the cover to be bold and simple, I think there is something about a striking image without text all over it that grabs attention, I have taken images of different albums that don’t use the track list on the back cover, i wanted to show where my inspiration for this idea rooted from and that it does work well. I want to justify my decision to keep the back and front cover simple and include the writing inside; i think it works well in the cases I looked at.  I think I have stuck to conventions by using a picture of the band on the cover and typical layout features such as the barcode and record label on the back and track list on the inside cover, I have found several examples of these layouts and used them for inspiration. The record label i have chosen our band to be signed to is XL recordings, i have chosen this because its an up to date record label and i think intoxicated would fit in with the acts already signed up to sony such as Adele and Radiohead.
Our media product develops current videos and advertising for artists, it uses current conventions of music videos and adverts but develops them further by using challenging techniques such as only using one location for our video, the fact that our male member of the band is featured less than our female artist and we concentrate on his hands and the dj’ing, and also my choice for the layout of my digipak not including the tracklist in the traditional place on the back to name a few.

Question 2 SECOND DRAFT

The combination of my main product and ancillary texts link well they all show consistency in creating a brand for the band intoxicated and their music. When starting to put together my digipak there where two main points I wanted to carry through them, my first point was that I wanted to keep the ‘loud’ and energetic them running throughout because I think that’s what makes my band so significant and distinctive.
We have created a focal point of the band being the female artist, we have made sure she is always connecting well with the audience whether she is looking straight down the camera or just showing her personality as not taking herself to seriously, we decided with the dj to keep him more on the side line of the video, we wanted to focus more on what he was doing and the effect it had on the song that keep zooming on his face/ expression.
The second thing I wanted to follow was the idea of their not being too much text, although the video uses a lot of shots with different colours and patterns we didn’t want to over complicate it by using to many people or different locations so I wanted the simplistic approach to also carry through so I decided to only use one block of large text being the track list and then small blocks- the band website etc.
We wanted to make intoxicated modern and unique we did this by creating a distinctive brand for them, We both wanted the advertising to be mainly about the music and genre to reach out to the specific audience we are targeting, in both of our digipaks we only decided to use one image of the band because we didn’t want to make it all about appearance.
The band is wearing the same clothes as in the video which brings regularity into my work. I have decided to use black and white as a them through my digipak and advert because in some ways black and white can be more striking than a bright colour and although a lot of bright colours were used in our video the advertising isn’t just for this particular song so I wanted to get it right, I have used the image as a theme because I think it works well in creating an identity for intoxicated. By taking an image starring the pattern that featured in the music video i have made an obvious link to the video once again creating the idea of a 'brand' for intoxicated.
I have used the same font on my digipak as on the advert, I used dafont.com to search for a font that suited the style I had in mind, I wanted something that was very dance/electro and when I found this font I thought it was perfect for the name intoxicated and fitted the dance theme well.

Question 3 SECOND DRAFT

we have created a script that we are going to as a commentary along with the images and videos we will use to demonstrate.

Evaluation Question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Mattie: Throughout the stages of research and planning and making and putting together both the video digipaks and adverts we have received several amounts of feedback.. Feedback from a variety of sources meant that we could take the advice from others and work on improving all pieces of work. we received feedback for my ancillary texts through different methods. This included Twitter, Blog posts, Facebook, Youtube. Through using the internet we could gain feedback on all ancillary texts form peers, teachers and the public.

Steph: Our first feedback came from the whole class when we put together and presented a pitch about what we plan to achieve and what genre, song etc we are going to use to create the identity of our artist or band.
We received mainly positive feedback from this but also received comments from our classmates and teachers; they seemed to be excited at the prospect of having a party video.
Steph However there were a few concerns about how we would film the party scenes so we could create the illusion that 50+ were present when actually there were only 8. Also the mise en scene had to look effective /realistic and this was stressed by teachers and peers after our pitch.
Mattie: Miss Hammond pointed us in the direction of an advertising campaign for always that we also reigned in for part of our inspiration, the feedback was extremely helpful because it allowed us to gather more inspiration and gain opinions from other peoples perspective, it also allowed us to know we are going in the right direction because we received positive comments.

Steph: We also received feedback from students in the class on our draft video, digipak/ adverts, feedback for the video were comments such as 'Good use of lighting' The lighting was an important part of our video. The lighting had to be correct and look effective, due to us using a projecter screen. We received other comments such as 'the creation of minimalistic party worked well. Is it just girls at your party?'  We didn't have as many people as we would've like at the filming. Therefore we had to use very few people in a small space. We previously found an advert that used this similar technique.
Mattie: another comment was that 'The artist could look more dressed up e.g red lipstick' We understand the feedback however we do not agree with this because the style of the band is edgy and quite casual. This is seen throughout the video. Therefore it would give promote the fun/casual and edgy message we wanted.
Steph: Throughout our planning and making we received feedback from our teachers, after our draft was created me, Mattie and our teachers agreed that the party scenes look to forced and almost look like a separate video compared to the screen shots.
Mattie:  we made the decision to get rid of all of them because the video started to look very amateur, we then made the decision to keep two of them in front of the screen because we didn’t want to completely scrap our idea, we think this decision completely changed our video for the better meaning it ties together more appropriately and looks more effective.
Steph: We have created a twitter feed for the band this was created in the hope that we could get a range of feedback from the large variety of people could be received by people using the social networking site. However gaining feedback by using this site was slightly restricting because only the people who followed 'Intoxicated' could actually comment or even see the work.
Mattie: We have also shared the video on Facebook in the hope of gaining some more feedback of what people think of the video and this would be valuable because of the age group we are friends with on twitter are around the target market we were aiming for.
Steph: I received really positive comments from my advert and digipak, people liked the image I chose to use and thought that there was a clear running theme that could be distinguished, the only concern someone had was that they felt it may have been too plain but when I started designing an idea I didn’t want to overcrowd anything i wanted to let the pattern and image be the focus.
Mattie: My digipak also received helpful feedback concerning the colour scheme that was completely changed in my final draft. I also received feedback concerning the how my media products suit the type of band. From the feedback on our draft ancillary texts we could really appreciate how important feedback is order to have a fantastic end media product.

Evaluation question 4 DRAFT

Evaluation Question 4 How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Blogger- Blogger has been used to upload all our research and planning for all three media products and all of our drafts work and progress as well as the final version.
Microsoft word- I used Microsoft word to create documents that would help me in my research and planning section I also used it to type up all of my blog post before I chose to send them.
Digital Video camera- we used the video camera to film all of the footage that we have gathered for our music video, without the video camera we would not have had a music video.
IPhone- we used our iPhones to take images of location shots and images of work in progress aswell as images of the band during filming and for digipaks and adverts because we felt they are good enough quality and easy for us to send/ upload them.
IPod- we used both our iPods to gain inspiration for a song idea and it in the end helped us by finidng the song we chose to use.
Final cut pro—We used final cut pro on the mac’s to put together our draft version and final version.
Internet- the internet helped me complete my research and planning section without all of the websites I used such as YouTube and dafont.com I would not have been able to put together the amount of research I have and the digipak and advert that I have.
Twitter- we created a twitter account for intoxicated.
Flickr- we used Flickr to make an account to upload images of the band.
Email- We used email to send images that we have taken of the band to our school account.
Animoto- We used animoto to create our pitch to the class about our created band, song and style of the music video.
Prezi- I made a prezi in my research and planning section it helped me out because it allowed me to see my work and present the direction I wanted to head in more clearly.
Photoshop- I used Photoshop when creating the mood board for our band, I also used it when creating both my digipak and advert, It helped me a lot, it allowed me to edit my image and the pattern by applying more contrast to create more of an effect.
YouTube- We used YouTube to share our pitch, our storyboard animoto, our draft version of the video and the final version also.
Projector screen- We used a projector screen for our video to project all of the patterns and colours that our band sung in front of, this really helped us because it allowed us to create a running theme and an identity for the video.
Tripod- We decide to use a tripod when filming because it meant the filming was steady and we had more chance of being in control with the directing and styling.
PC- we used computers for all of our work that wasn’t on the MacBook’s, such as blog posts and Photoshop, this allowed us to build all of the foundations for our video before and also after we filmed and put it together.
Facebook- We used Facebook after are video was made to share the video on Facebook for added feedback and recognition.

Text layout for tracklist on albums

I have looked at a few different layout for tracklist and I think my favourite is probably having all the text towards the top of the cd.

Digipack feedback

From the feedback i have recieved i have decided to change the purple/pink bacground and to carry on the striking black and white look that is on the front 3 pages because i think this theme works better and creates more of an image. i have also decided because of the comment about the image being striking to try this image on the front cover and see if it works, and i am also missing the extra features.

Different pattern ideas

In some part of the album pack I want to include a bold eye catching pattern because I feel it will represent the band and the dance music genre, it also has a link into the music video.

More album inspiration

Florence and machine cover
I have chosen to use this Florence and the machine cover for inspiration because of the features such as the colour scheme, I like how the different colours are used over the picture it gives the image more of a lively edge and I would think about using colours like that as well as the way the font is positioned because I think this also gives the text a bit of character.

Flo rida album cover
I have chosen to use this Flo rida cover for inspiration because of the features such as the dance theme, you can clearly tell what the genre id from looking at it, because of how stands out but looks current and interesting.

i have started my album cover research by looking at bands such as The Tings Tings and the layouts and themes of their cover. i
have then also looked at different dance/ pop music being the same genre and looking at the covers so we can gain inspiration from them.

storyboard

This is the storyboard we have created on paper, this storyboard shows each stage of filming so we can clearly see what shots we need to consider when filming for our music video, from this we have been able to consider appropriate locations and props we need to include and it has given us a clear idea of how many shots we need to use.

Storyboarding

We have created a rough idea of what our video will look like with this storyboard. The storyboard was created on IMovie which we found easy to use.
The timing however is not matched perfectly with the music, and the lyrics need to be matched better to the action of the female artist. We are aware that the cuts/camera shots are probably too long for this 'dance' video so they need to be modified so they fit with the music. This is something we need to consider and put right before the filming takes place.
Each Post it pad is numbered so the order of each cut is clear and when it comes to filming we will be able to have our numbered storyboard in-front of us and refer to the shot we want via the number on the post it.

Filming locations

This is where most of the outside filming will take place. We will be using artificial lighting because the filming will take place at night.
This is the room where most of the 'daning' shots will take place. We will also set up the Dj and have the party people in this room.

Scheduele list

What needs to be done before and during the filming process.
  1. hire camera and tripod from library to film with.
  2. get images of chloe and joe (female and male artists in band) - for twitter& cd cover.
  3. Finalise a date for filming and make sure everyone can make it.
  4. get chloe's single shots on plain background (lip syncing)
  5. get Joe's single dj shots on plain background
  6. (Buy props if necessary)
  7. collect all equipment such as lights, camera's and tripods in order to film.
  8. gather appropriate props for party scenes
  9. get everyone in the location and film party and outside scenes at night
  10. edit and post progression as we go along.

Pitch to class

One of the main concerns with our media video was the lighting. Some of our shots will take place in the dark therefore we will need to use artificial lighting. To solve the lighting issue we have a flood light that we can use for the exterior shots as well as disco lights for the interior shots of the party.

Another issue raised during our pitch was the concern that we will need a lot of people to make our ‘Project x’ Party scene look realistic. We will aim to resolve this problem by having approximately twenty people organised in a small area to create the illusion that there are 100+ people there.

Before filming, we also have to think about the props we use e.g dj mixing board. As well as this the style of the band is crucial and so is the style of the people in the party. We want them to represent our target audience/ audience profile.
